The Role

Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE: SWK) is seeking a Vice President Engineering, Power Tools Technology to provide thought leadership, influence and hands-on engagement to develop, direct, and implement the technology and innovation agenda across the Americas and EMEA for our Tools & Outdoor segment.  Reporting to the Chief Engineering & Technology Officer, this role will oversee the full spectrum of  Technology and Engineering for Stanley Black & Decker’s flagship DEWALT professional power tools portfolio, from advanced technology development to product, system and solution design and development, electrification, value engineering and product/service introduction and commercialization.

The VP Engineering, Power Tools Technology will lead a geographically dispersed team of over 800 engineers across the Americas and EMEA, with the largest concentration of employees located in Towson, Maryland and Idsteain Germany, two of our premier global engineering and technology centers.  This role will also lead engineering teams in our factories located in Monterrey and Reynosa, Mexico. The VP Engineering, Power Tools Technology will be expected to drive end-user centric product innovation, technology insertion, and elevate execution capabilities internally across the Tools & Outdoor Segment and Stanley Black & Decker globally through alliances, partnerships and with other external constituents.

This position is based at our Tools & Outdoor headquarters in Towson, Maryland.

Primary Accountabilities

Working closely with business leaders across the Tools & Outdoor segment, along with our engineering centers of excellence, this leader will create and gain coalescence behind a robust and actionable global technology strategy, structure and roadmap for our professional electrified power tools portfolio.Drive the development of innovative new products with emphasis on the professional line of DEWALT power tools, systems, and solutions. This leader will partner closely with the DEWALT President and General Manager to understand the market, technology trends and applications to bring value to our customers through innovative solutions to current product paint points. The leader will also support key initiatives executed the Engineering Centers under his/her responsibility for other brands including STANLEY and CRAFTSMAN.Manage strategies to decrease new product development cycle time, increase the innovation pipeline, and work across the Tools & Outdoor business to maximize DEWALT’s competitive position, top line margin expansion, productivity gains, free cash flow, meet customer growth objectives and deliver world-class operational metrics.Lead the program management team to ensure we deliver new products to meet the timing specified by our channel partners.  Ensure an agile, yet structured, product development process is followed to ensure efficient use of our engineering resources.Partner closely with key leaders across product management, industrial design, packaging, operations and advanced innovation.  Manage product design, platforming and complexity programs.Work closely with functional engineering disciplines to identify and foster key alliances with academic institutions, outside labs, partner companies and suppliers in order to enhance the advanced technology thinking and capabilities of the business. Manage a direct team of engineering leaders. Direct reports include leaders responsible for new product development, new technology introduction and life-cycle productivity. Promote Stanley Black & Decker global engineering processes that result in value creation in the form of increased speed to market, reduced costs, improved technologies, and innovative products.  Drive Value Analysis/Value Engineering.Work closely with the Global Supply Chain leader and the manufacturing team to ensure products are designed for manufacturability using leading Operational Excellence tools and processes.Adopt and promote the modular and platform product architecture initiative underway to drive flexibility to meet customer demand, reduce cycle time and accelerate new technology introduction.Drive a Design-to-Value mindset across the organization and implement projects in factories across the world.Provide leadership to ensure the continued improvement in availability and competence of technology personnel throughout the company.  Work toward a best-in-class technology and engineering capability through improved succession planning, organizational assessment, the identification of key skill gaps, and overall talent acquisition and talent development strategies that link with business goals.Support the company’s footprint strategy which consists of global design centers with focus on leveraging talent to enhance design/development capabilities in emerging markets.Lead front-end innovation efforts for our professional tools and solutions. This will include ingestion of new connectivity, AI, sensors, and other advanced tech into our portfolio to drive end-user value.

Candidate Profile

Senior Engineering leadership experience at the business unit, regional or enterprise level from a company known for innovation and engineering excellence, ideally in the global consumer engineered products or branded goods space15+ years of experience in global companies in advanced technology, engineering and product management functions with experience leading large, geographically dispersed engineering teamsExperience with electrified products, digital emerging technologies, software IoT and embedded systemsSignificant product engineering and scalable platforming experience with a proven track record of successDeep knowledge of platforming and modular design as well as extensive experience establishing design plans, developing roadmaps and reducing complexityExcellent personal leadership, change management and ability to collaborate and influence cross-functionally—can conduct a dialogue that is intellectually honest, brings out diversity of ideas and creates the appropriate integration/connectivityDeveloper of talent and capabilities; great people leader.  Can select and lead both people with deep expertise and people with breadthTechnical degree, Ph.D. or Masters in Engineering from a leading academic institution, plus business education (MBA preferred); professionally active in societies, professional associations and networksPersonal succession potential and desire to build capability for future leadership roles at Stanley Black & Decker
