Join Paylocity and launch your career! The Privacy Counsel plays a key role in advancing Paylocity’s privacy program by identifying, assessing, and addressing privacy risks. This role partners closely with cross-functional stakeholders to promote consistent, effective data privacy practices that minimize risk and protect personal information. As a strategic advisor and hands-on contributor, the Privacy Counsel will provide thought leadership and practical guidance on a range of privacy matters, including contracting, regulatory compliance, privacy-by-design, data minimization, and information safeguarding. This position is a people leader role and is ideal for an attorney eager to shape and manage a best-in-class privacy program. Primary Responsibilities The below represents the primary duties of the position, others may be assigned as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Partner with the Chief of Privacy to drive the execution of the enterprise privacy strategy and advance the privacy roadmap. • Maintain understanding and expertise of new and evolving privacy regulations including domestic and international laws and provide actionable guidance to ensure compliance and strategic alignment. • Act as subject matter expert and primary escalation point for data protection issues in contracting. • Draft, negotiate, and close privacy and data protection agreements with clients and vendors, and support data protection negotiation in commercial contracting process. • Work closely with commercial legal team on improvements to privacy contracting process, tools and related efficiencies. • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders – including sales, product, engineering, and operations – to embed privacy-by-design principles into product development and business processes. • Perform regular privacy assessments of new and existing business processes (including through data protection impact assessments as applicable). • Provide practical and timely advice to internal clients in compliance with applicable data protection requirements, including those relating to cross-border data transfers. • Draft, maintain, and optimize privacy-related templates, including DPA, consent notices, negotiation cheat sheets and playbooks, to support consistent and efficient implementation. • Advise the marketing and digital teams on global compliance requirements related to privacy practices in marketing initiatives, including use of cookies, demand generation, tracking technologies, and analytics. • Design and deliver engaging privacy and data protection training for employees across functions and levels. • Lead privacy due diligence for mergers and acquisitions and support the post-acquisition integration of privacy practices and controls. • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop, update, and enforce enterprise-wide privacy and data protection policies and procedures. • Manage and maintain public-facing privacy assets, including Paylocity’s Privacy Center, ensuring timely updates to privacy notices, cookie policies, and FAQs. • Support privacy-related initiatives, providing legal advice and strategic guidance across business units on privacy risks, mitigations, and best practices. • Mentor and support data privacy team members. Education and Experience • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to a State Bar • 6+ years of privacy experience in the SaaS space • In-depth knowledge of state and global privacy laws and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, BIPA, etc.) • People management experience • Experience leading a team of legal professionals, providing strategic guidance, mentorship, and performance oversight to support business-aligned legal outcomes and ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate standards. • Certifications in privacy (e.g., CIPP, CIPT, CIPM) are a plus • In-house experience a plus • Experience with different privacy frameworks, such as GAPP and NIST • Experience negotiating privacy aspects of SAAS and technology agreements • Strong understanding of engineering principles and best practices • Ability to translate privacy requirements into practical solutions and outcomes • Ability to exercise risk-based judgment and propose solutions to complex problems • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment • Familiarity with OneTrust or other privacy management software • Physical requirements • Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7-8 hours a day. • Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. The pay range for this position is $98,000-$180,000/yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here.
