Litigation/Risk Attorney - Casualty Litigation
AutoZone’s Legal Department is seeking a talented attorney to help oversee our casualty litigation. The successful candidate will lead strategy on complex general liability, product liability, consumer complaints, and asbestos claims, handling pre-litigation disputes and resolving litigated claims with cross-functional partners. Further, you will help develop programs and tools that contain costs, working closely with our Risk Management Department and third-party administrator (TPA). You will also support the Commercial Credit team by providing legal advice and counsel on contract and collections issues. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES + Within the Legal Department, the successful candidate will support and report to the Managing Attorney, be enthusiastic AutoZone’s culture, driving change, going the “extra mile,” and taking on new challenges. Duties will include, but are not limited to the following: + Actively manage and successfully resolve busy portfolio of casualty, product liability and asbestos claims. + Select, retain, and supervise outside counsel, including coordinating with law firms on managing budgets and controlling costs + Serve as strategic legal partner to the business, providing advice and counsel on business practices, risk avoidance/mitigation, and legal compliance; provide timely reports on substantive developments in legal matters + Develop strategy and action plans for claims in tandem with internal / external counsel, TPAs and insurance companies + Oversee all aspects of internal discovery process, including reviewing and developing strategy on discovery requests and responses, collecting, reviewing and producing internal documents, coordinating e-discovery, identifying and interviewing witnesses, and participating in key witness testimony preparations + Partner with team’s paralegals and other attorney(s) to successfully manage litigation and other projects, as needed + Mediation and settlement strategy and attendance in conjunction with internal/external legal partners, insurance companies, and TPAs + Field and address business partners on-going questions and issues through claims resolution as needed + Lead special projects within the Legal Department to drive efficiencies, contributed to knowledge management and support efforts to establish, assess, and maintain performance metrics of the team + Other duties as may be required EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE + Strong academic credentials including a J.D. degree and membership in one state bar is required + 3 to 5 years of relevant experience at a law firm or in-house + Ability to travel domestically as needed (5-10% of time) + Current member in good standing of the Tennessee bar, or member in good standing of another state bar and capable of gaining admission in Tennessee as in-house counsel.
