Systems Engineer

Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) through its In-Service Support (ISS) Programs. Between the AOPS & JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) and Minor Warships & Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) programs, Thales Canada provides support to over 70% of the RCN fleet. Thales Canada is leveraging cutting edge solutions to deliver preventative and corrective maintenance, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), Program Management, Engineering and Lifecycle Material Management (LCMM), and new capabilities to numerous platforms.

Thales Canada is looking for people interested in directly contributing to Engineering Change (EC) in the AJISS program. A multi-disciplinary team develops and delivers enhanced and new capabilities for RCN platforms through a broad portfolio of EC projects. We are looking for Naval Architects as well as Mechanical, Systems, and Electrical Engineers and Technologists to deliver Engineering work products through all stages of the EC process. Familiarity with Systems Engineering concepts and practices is beneficial. A demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and processes is considered an asset.

Key Areas of Responsibility

In their efforts to develop and sustain mission systems, Systems Engineers are called upon to integrate a variety of sensors, software, firmware, and apps on commercial and military platforms. The essential functions and responsibilities of a Systems Engineer include:

Tailor the system engineering process, practices and tools;Provide timely and accurate status updates;Develop the preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements;Review and validate internal and subcontractor designs, plans, and schedules;Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and document and design reviews;Author technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces, and installation elements;Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the designs are consistent with needs, desires, and concerns of the end-users;Support the development of verification and validation artifacts including plans and procedures;Collaborate with other functions during the implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements;Support the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site; and/orTechnical subcontract management including management of work scope and compliance of the (subcontractor) supplied solution;

For this specific project, typical duties will include:

Conduct research on Naval Systems, System Requirements, Standards, and new technologies;Generate, describe, and recommend solutions to customer concerns as part of the option analysis process;Produce engineering artefacts including (but not limited to) first principles drawings and system schematics, Statements of Work, System Requirements Documents (SRD), Impact Analyses, and technical reports;Survey and analysis of shipboard systems;Planning, authoring, and executing integration and acceptance tests; andCoordinating and collaborating with a multi-disciplinary dispersed team.

Minimum Requirements

3 to 6 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.Ability to succeed in cross-functional/multidisciplinary teams.Ability to obtain clearances as specified under the Regulatory Compliance section, below.University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

Naval Architecture;Marine Electrical;IPESA;C4 Combat Systems (in any domain); and/orInternal / External Communication Systems (in any domain).

Physical Demands

Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally work in a lab and dockyards and onboard Naval shipsMay be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft

Special Position Requirements

40 hours per weekHybrid position – a mix of working from homePossibility of travel to east or west coast sites for technical support / installation onboard ships in dock.

Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), inclusive of annual salary and bonus eligibility, for this role is 86,138.88 - 116,785.73 - 154,432.71 CAD Annua ​. The Company reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s status protected by local, provincial, and federal laws.

Position Summary

This is a hybrid role in Ottawa

Thales is looking to hire an Intermediate Naval Systems Engineer to complete all Systems Engineering (SE) tasks for requirements solicitation and analysis, basic and detailed design activities, systems integration and interface definition of Naval Electronic systems.

Key Responsibilities

The Intermediate Naval Systems Engineer shall develop expertise on the job, however, is expected to already have some experience in the Systems Engineering life cycle, including typical tools for requirements development (for example, DOORS) and modeling tools for design.Analyze, define and trace system requirements and recommend performance measures.Support the design of electronic systems including: Definition of operational use cases, Definition of system use case, Development of logical and physical architectures, Specify interface exchange requirements and develop interface control documents, Develop Functional block diagrams & cable diagrams and connection diagrams, Define Traceability to system requirements.Support the technical aspects of the competitive procurement process: Provide technical input to the Request for Proposals (RFP) package, analysis and evaluation of RFP responses from suppliers, supplier management including scope, and compliance of the supplied technical solution, produce and manage an engineering bill of materials, integration of procured systems in a multi-disciplinary environment.Assist in the verification and validation of electronic systems.Assist in risk management and risk mitigation strategies.Assist in obtaining stakeholder agreement about changes to and management of the system requirements.Recommend electronic system solution designs that are innovative, scalable, and adaptive.Support the integration of electronic systems in a multi-disciplinary environment.Support the development of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) between components.Develop currency in electronic system best practices, methodologies, initiatives and advancements.Have a comprehensive understanding of naval systems and design standards for commercial and naval platforms following IMO and Class requirements, Lloyds Regiter Rules & Regulations, IEC standards, IMO Regulations, SOLAS regulations, Transport Canada marine Acts and Regulations. These skills are expected to be developed.Have experience in ship design, build, operation and maintenance.It would be an asset to have experience with Canadian ship building requirements for shock and vibration, EMC/EMI, drawing standards and industry design standards. These skills are expected to be developed.High level oral and written communication skills required for report writing and design justification documentation.

Key Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent education with relevant experience.Experience: 2 to 5 years experience in a Naval systems engineering environment.Technical/Specialized Knowledge: Experience with electronic systems.Certifications: P.Eng. or CET or eligible to obtain P.Eng or CET.Language: English required.

Key Qualifications

Experience: In the defence industry.Technical/Specialized Knowledge: Experience with naval systems is highly desirable.Language: French fluency would be an asset.

Regulatory Compliance Regulations

Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR.

Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.

Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level.
