Education: Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Math, or equivalent.
Experience: Two years minimum of college/university-level coursework in information security.
Must have three years of continuous residency in the U.S. for issuance of a Government Security credential
Position Summary: This unique opportunity is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students pursuing a career in information security. This summer internship opportunity will provide the applicant entry-level information security experience with progressing responsibility and experience. The work, in information assurance, system compliance, continuous data monitoring, or maintaining/enhancing overall Center security posture, will be hands-on support of the various missions of the EROS (Earth Resources Observation and Science) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/), located near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The purpose of this position is designed so that the student will have the opportunity to apply principles and theories learned in the classroom, gain new skills, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field. This position holds potential to grow into full-time employment upon graduation, pending project funding.
Core Responsibilities:
The Information Security Intern is responsible for helping perform the following --
Assists with investigating virus and malware alerts to determine origin and frequencyAssists with researching information security solutions for SIEM, IEM, etc.Assists with testing multi factor and encryption technologiesAssists with reviewing security log filesAttend department meetings to discuss security issues and solutionsAssists with other information security related dutiesCommunicate and coordinate activities and technical status with the assigned mentorParticipate in peer reviewsEnsure proper process is followed and documentation is properly maintainedPerform studies or analysis problemsRequired Skills:
Basic information security / information systems methodology knowledgeSecurity control standardsAbility to work independently as well as part of a teamExcellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skillsDesired Skills:
Unix/Linux knowledgeScripting knowledgeWillingness to learnThe candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
