Job Purpose

The Head of Nature & Forest Commodities Sustainability - is responsible for the development of integrated portfolio procurement sustainability strategies and their effective implementation for best impact across Unilever’s footprint of critical Nature and Forest Risk raw materials including Palm, Wood Based Packaging and Coconut. In crafting and implementing the most impactful and effective sustainability strategies the job has a significant role to play in delivering Unilever’s overall goals for climate, nature, and livelihoods in line with delivering on our Growth Action Plan. 

The role is also responsible for the global program and delivery for key Unilever Nature Goals of 1) maintaining our deforestation free supply chain across palm, wood-based packaging, soy and cocoa and 2) our flagship program of protecting and restoring one million hectares of natural ecosystems by 2030.  

As a key member of the raw materials leadership team this role will also work closely with the procurement teams for the respective portfolios and will be a core enabler of the overall portfolio commercial strategy, delivering more resilient, integrated and competitive sustainable business models. In respective portfolios the role works with other sustainability leaders and teams to embed further programs related to livelihoods, regenerative agriculture and climate into the strategy, delivery models and implementation plans of the portfolio teams. 

 

Main Responsibilities 

Strategic Leadership 

Responsible for the developing the global long term sustainability strategy together with stakeholders from sustainability teams, procurement, supply chain, finance, R&D, business groups and units for respect portfolios. 

Translating strategy into delivery in designing respective impact programs to be run together with our suppliers and partners and bring strategy to life on the ground. 

Continuously benchmarking our approach with competitors and peers and tapping into external networks. Benchmarking against best practices – innovate and identify metrics, tools, and process to optimize sustainable sourcing, impact programs and efficiencies in delivering our goals – create the fuel for impact. 

Initiate and drive large change management and value chain integration projects which enable our path to positive impact. 

Lead and establish of the centres of excellence in sustainability at strategic integrated sites, like Unilever Oleochemicals Indonesia, intended to be the benchmark and lead the industry in the supply of sustainable tropical oils derivatives. 

Build a collaborative team environment that constantly learns and builds best practice. 

 

Program & Portfolio Management 

Leading the delivering of Unilever ‘s multi-year commitments and sustainability goals across Nature, Climate and Livelihoods within our Tropical Oils and Wood Based Packaging value chains - especially focusing on sustainable sourcing, deforestation and conversion free supply chains, decarbonisation of scope 3 and in particular our associated Forest and Land Use emissions (FLAG), enhancing livelihoods, protecting and restoring nature and regenerative agriculture. 

Lead a global team running programs on the ground in key commodity sourcing areas as well as provide leadership on the agenda to key procurement teams across SEA, Latam, North America, Africa Middle East, South Asia and Northeast Asia. 

Support our ambitions for expanding responsible and impactful direct sourcing and sustainable supply to Unilever Oleochemicals Indonesia. 

 

Business Partnering & Engagement 

Lead relationships across our key partners and programs with effective supplier communications and engagement in key programs. 

Proactively manage our relationships and key sustainability metrics with suppliers across the supply chain. 

Lead and design the technology data provision partnerships to accelerate transparency and traceability of materials creating faster more effective pathways to drive, measure and manage impact. Leader in digital Innovation for nature, drive industry wide transparency. 

Support Unilever in relationship management and engagement with key opinion formers and civil society. 

Collaborate with the Climate and Nature team and across our business with external partners to develop our pipeline of co-financed projects and programs. 

Represent Unilever in key industry platforms being an advocate for industry impact. 

 

Governance & Capability Building 

Own the delivery of nature-based reporting as needed on deforestation and protect and restore programs including metrics and impact reporting. 

Lead and support Unilever’s response and preparedness to manage relevant regulatory changes that impact our supply chains and suppliers e.g. EUDR. 

Effectively manage sustainability budgets and activity-based costing to ensure that we deliver our commitments making utmost effective use of resources and external partners.

Experiences & Qualifications 

​​Essential: 

​At least 15+ years’ experience in Sustainability, Agriculture, Procurement or sustainability linked supply chain management. 

​Proven track record of implementing successful sustainability programs with positive impact and transformative results. 

​Expertise in sustainability as it pertains to the respective value chains upstream and downstream or, expertise in sustainability as it pertains to the other relevant value chains upstream and downstream. 

​Demonstrated and proven leadership capabilities to lead diverse regional or global teams and cross functionally. 

​Have the ‘gravitas’ (experience, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills), allowing them to interact with senior stakeholders effectively and efficiently across the company and externally. 

​Demonstrated capability in dialing up the different standards of leadership for high performance. 

​Preferred: 

​Advanced education in agroforestry, forestry, agronomy, business and agricultural economics, or related fields preferred. 

​Strategic sourcing, procurement portfolio strategy expertise 

​Experience in other similar commodities coupled with commercial acumen. 

​Experience in operations- end to end portfolio management. 

​Experience in cofinance of programs and projects.​ 

 

Skills 

Subject matter expertise on palm, tropical and liquid oils commodities and/or wood-based value chains. 

Subject matter expertise and track record in leading sustainability program design for impact and managing a theory of change into implementation. 

Subject matter expertise on peat management, high conservation value areas and high carbon stock. 

Subject matter expertise in decarbonisation of supply chains, environmental sustainability, deforestation and conversion free value chains, conservation and restoration, regenerative agriculture, social sustainability, livelihoods programs and strategy.  

Design of public private partnerships and multistakeholder collaborations at landscape level. 

Engagement and influencing skills on a senior level.  

Negotiation skills, communications skills,  

Digital and analytics knowledge for reporting capabilities on sustainability. 

Financial and business acumen for business cases and reporting.  

International business and leadership experience, good interpersonal and storytelling skills for business influencing.
