Global Technical Specialist - Engine Performance, Global Virtual Engineering
Job Description

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Pontiac three times per week, at minimum.  

The Role

The Global Technical Specialist - Engine Performance, Global Virtual Engineering will work on leading edge engine technologies and architectures for GM’s future vehicle programs. This position provides technical leadership and guidance for 1D engine modeling techniques and propulsion architecture decisions.  The Global Technical Specialist will work with Advanced Engineering, Combustion Development and the Engine Hardware Teams to develop and validate designs for new and future products. Responsible for setting the strategic technical vision for the team, including leading capability growth and facilitating standard work training. 

The Technical Specialist will be instrumental in:

Growing virtual methods for engine out emissions, catalyst heating optimization, and engine system integration for emissions complianceLeveraging the power and speed of 1D software to add variation into models to drive technical decision making with uncertaintyEnhancing the valvetrain kinematics and dynamics toolsetGrowing Machine Learning, Optimization, Visualization, and Co-Simulation within the groupReimagining engine physical testing (firing and non-firing) via virtual methods; drive lab test reductions

What You'll Do

Provide technical direction and mentoring to Virtual Propulsion Engineers working on virtual design, development, and validation of engine subsystems and valvetrainInterface with Virtual Propulsion Engineers, Product Release Teams, Architects, Advanced Engineers and Technical Specialists to develop optimal design solutions that meet all requirementsOwn engine model guidelines, simulation best practices, version control, and technical review processesLead modeling capability development initiatives and technical strategic vision for the teamIntegrate new processes and methods into engineering Standard WorkProvide training for new and existing analysis proceduresSeek out state of the art tools and methods, keep up with industry trends to ensure our team is at the leading edgeSupport Code Red and urgent break/fix product issuesSupport analysis project technical reviews and PPDRsInterface with other Virtual Engineering groups to establish common processes (model types, model storage/versioning, signal naming)Be a change agent to move left and to enable hardware reduction initiativesCommunicate status to leadership and escalating issues/roadblocks within the organization as necessary to meet timing 

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor’s degree in engineering required- Mechanical or Electrical preferred

7+ years of engineering experience in Internal Combustion Engines

Expertise in 1D modeling and simulation of engine systems

Expertise in translating physical phenomena and behaviors into virtual models

Demonstrated technical leadership capability, including ability to:

Successfully lead large and/or difficult projects to completion

Organize teams around challenging issues and projects

Communicate clearly and succinctly to leadership and customers

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

Master’s degree in engineering preferred

Experience with development of advanced engine technology

Experience with engine, transmission, or electrification controls development, calibration, and verification/validation

Experience with engine valvetrain design and analysis

Experience with model-based calibration, empirical data modeling, data analysis, and/or programming

DFSS Black Belt certification
